Oldest Southern Hemisphere Sea Reptile Fossil Unearthed in New Zealand

An international team of scientists identified the oldest known sea-going reptile fossil from the Southern Hemisphere: a nothosaur vertebra discovered on New Zealand's South Island, dating back 246 million years to the dawn of the Age of Dinosaurs when New Zealand bordered the southern polar coast of Panthalassa. This discovery challenges previous assumptions about the distribution and early evolution of sea reptiles, shedding new light on their ancient migrations and adaptation to polar environments during a time of global warming.
